Raise a toast to Michigan wines?
Northern
Michigan’s wines are earning national and international attention.
Sitting on the 45th parallel, the area’s wine growing region occupies
the same latitude as the centuries-old winegrowing regions in southern
France and northern Italy.
Winemaking and wine tourism represent a major industry, generating about $75 million in 2003.
Old
Mission Peninsula hosts six wineries, while the Leelanau Peninsula
nearly a dozen. Most have wine tasting events and tours. You can also
bicycle through the area or relax aboard a mini bus or stretch limo.
Throughout
the summer season, there are countless wine festivals, tastings and
dinners where the uninitiated can get acquainted with pairing wines and
dishes.
Michigan
vintners also play a key role in land preservation efforts, helping
ensure the area’s rich agricultural heritage continues for future
generations.
